Birds from the Australian Trip 2004 [Travel] April 2004 Back to Australia for a short visit in April 2004. We stayed with Evelyn in Sydney again and it gave me the opportunity to renew my acquaintance with some of her friendly birds. Most were still visiting, but some were missing. Natural attrition. Some of the magpies still came calling. And the Noisy Miner was still coming round. Some of the kookaburras still come round. Two years ago there were about six in the family, but now only three or four come round. They've spotted a currawong and are pretty focussed. They did not get along with the currawongs. The currawong got too close so one kookaburra had a spat with it. After that little bingle, the two are content to pretend to ignore each other while focussing carefully on each other. The other two felt pretty triumphant and the lead one was laughing about the bingle. Two currawongs sulking after the fight. One of the little crested pigeons keeps coming back. Evelyn said they mate for life, so the mate must have met with an accident. They don't stay still and every time they move they have that pigeon-jerk of the head, so almost all the photos I took of the crested pigeon have the head slightly blurred. Two butcherbirds come around for a snack occasionally. On a beautiful sunny day with no clouds, Maggie Magpie came back and let me get pretty close to her. This let me get a few good closeups. After Sydney, we went north to Townsville and stayed with Chris and Janet. They have a little fernery and a small Yellow-Bellied Sunbird has started visiting them.
